Huseyin Sami presents 'Pi-de'
Huseyin invited the female members of his family to make and serve “Pi-de”, a turkish bread. Parralleling the passing of
cultural traditions with his artistic lineage as a painter : Huseyin
highlighted how traditions change and material is consequently re-interpreted.
Traditionally the art of Pi-de is only taught to and made by females
but in this instance Huseyin donned a headscarf and joined his wife,
mother-in-law, aunts, female cousins and grandmother in making the
bread. It was generous and sincere gesture signifying a welcome.
As the setting sun filled the gallery with a golden light, there
was a general sense of warmth to the evening, candles and Turkish
music aiding the communial atmosphere.
