The project consists of 10 - 20 'heads' made from soft balls about
25cm in diameter, with a digital print of the artists sleeping face
on. The “heads” are placed in various situations around
the city such as bus seats, train stations, public spaces of waiting
and meeting, and between physical structures. Negotiating public domains
and passages , the dis-embodied head questions how the architecture
of the city defines us. As an unconscious object in transition, it is struggling to find a sense of place, and inner peace.
Biography
Jodie Maurer is an artist who takes utility to kooky extremes.
Using found objects as a foundation, sponge slabs and scourers evolve
into uncanny dioramas, incorporating model-maker’s fi gurines
to surreal effect. Used washing up sponges become varying states of
fantastical grassy terrain, upon which nuns run for cover under palm
trees; a sculptor tirelessly chisels a naked muse; and tiny astronauts
navigate uncharted foam moonscapes. Humour and reverence inhabit Maurer's
absurd and endearing microcosms of human existence. Her sculptures
present frozen narrative moments, evoking mischievous and often macabre
personal and collective histories. Executed in a naïve and unpolished
fashion, the sculptures both refl ect and transcend their material
properties, providing a playful window into which we can consider
the ironic and poignant questions Maurer poses.
